I totally gave in...
I gave in, and purchased the Elgato EyeTv 500, which records HDTV streams to my Mac. It is being shipped to me, and I also need to get a 20 dollar HDTV antenna, but aftewards, "hey!"
I will have my own TiVo kind of thing, and I won't have to pay a subscription fee!

Let me know if you have any luck finding a way to make DVDs directly from the SD or HD streams in Toast or some software. The only way I can get to work is through iMovie by going to DV mode first, it takes a while and you lose the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack (it converts to PCM digital 2 channel). I have tried Toast DVD SP2 and other ways, no luck.
