The Other 48 Days (Lost - 3.7)
LOST tonight followed the Taillies on their 48 days on the island. Amazing how 45 minutes can sum up what took a season and a little bit for the other side. Obviously, they were more exciting than these people. Because of the time needed to explain, the show went pretty fast and there wasn't a lot of side stories. We got to see about Mr. Eko, Ana Lucia, Bernard, Goodwin, and the rest of the Taillies. Spoilers Ahead
First off, this episode made each day shown into a chapter. Lots of cards on it with "Day 1," and so forth, then "Day 48/ Today" which was exciting. The extended part of this episode was simply a montage of previously seen footage. It was a scam to get us, the viewers, to see some commercials for Invasion. It was a rip-off, and mean to get our hopes up. I can't decide if I like the chapters or not, but they worked very well in telling this story. Also, when it cut to black, it was very suspenseful.
Bernard is most likely the best actor. I would say Mr. Eko is, but then again, he does a lot of non-vocal acting and stuff. Bernard did a lot of dramatic stuff, and he plays the part of an old white dude well. Ana Lucia, I just don't like her acting style, she just seems kind of awkward in her part. Uhm, Ana Lucia in this episode is completely paranoid. Can we please see her flashbacks soon. Is she an EMT, or a cop, or something? Also, the next episode teasers have her seemingly being a B once again. She seems to be motivated by wanting to save the kids, but then she is just damn paranoid. I guess they make her look more compassionate when they have her cry. But she is just mean, like, when she tells Bernard "there are no survivors," that just crushes him because he still has hope that the one person on the island he loves is out there.
What I didn't know was why Goodwin stayed around and helped out so much if he was bad. He built a fire, he caught a chicken, he was incredibly nice and never tried to harm anyone... until he decided to kill Nathan. Then he was just creepy to have around. I mean, in the previous mention of Goodwin, in the previous two episodes, he came off as a good guy, and even in the beginning. I liked him, but then he betrayed me.
I am upset that Nathan died, I liked him. He was on Ed, did anyone ever watch that? Jack's wife was also on Ed. Now they need to get Michael Ian Black and the guy who played Ed in flashbacks and they can get the complete Ed main character cast. All the people that were taken by the others, will we see them again? Do the others kill, hurt, or are they "better off" now? The writers did a good job of making us believe that Nathan was the bad guy, complete with starting the idea that Goodwin was good a few episodes ago, and then keeping us thinking he was good right until the end.
What was the whole "waiting 40 days" thing. Mr. Eko waited 40 days to talk, Ana Lucia waited 40 days to cry. Of course, there is a connection between the Bible and the number 40, but 42 is one of the "numbers." It is something about keeping in the sadness instead of expressing it, and it coming out in the wrong ways.
Let's talk about the Others. Are there different Others? I say this only because the Raft Others look different from the Jungle Others. The Jungle Others look like they are from some weird commune, while the Raft Others look like they are homeless folk. We do learn some more about the Others. (also the writers are really smart by giving the audience a superior position in known that Goodwin is bad, and Ana Lucia wins, we know that there is going to be a showdown, and that makes watching it more exciting)
First of all, the others have been there for at least 20 years. They took the children and now they are "better off." The people on the list were "good" people. The others are highly trained, maybe they were part of the peace corps? No? Well, no one really knows because there weren't a lot of answers. But this episode we got to see the most of the others than we ever have before.
I'd be interested to know when they filmed this in comparison to the first 6 episodes. When they had Boone talking through the radio, that was so damn cool. I predicted that before watching this show tonight. Where was the security system, the monster? We saw none of the "good" pre-815 residents, such as Desmond or Danielle. If I hear Jin saying "Others! Others!" when he running from the Taillies one more time in a new episode, I might go INSANE. Also huge props to Kevin Blank for the amazing visual effects!
Some cool set up for other episodes are: Still more Dharma hatch stuff, and why is there an extra glass eye in there. Next week is going to be amazoing when the Fuselagers and the Taillies get to meet and everyone hates Ana Lucia (that paranoid bitch).
