Arizona 2005 (Day 2)
This morning was a 7 AM wake up (9 AM DC Time) so we could go to the Grand Canyon. 2 hour drive there and back. I had always seen pictures of the Canyon and it did seem big, but I did not really know realize it until I got off the van and looked out and said "Holy Moly." I usually don't say "Holy Moly," but this was a special circumstance, it seemed. It was pretty big
We were getting a Grand Canyon Tour from Canyon Dave. Canyon Dave knew a lot about the Canyon. However, we were joined by his equally educated wife, Dora "The Explorer." She was very nice as the 11 member Cohen family packed into the 15 passenger Canyon Dave van. I spent the time in the van playing car gars with my 12.5 year old cousin Michael, and by listening to some phatty Phish jams. Dora also told us some facts about the Canyon and the surrounding ecosystem.
We got out of the van at the South Rim and walked down a bit on the Bright Angel trail thingy. The view was incredible, I mean, you can see the Canyon in photos, but it was just amazing. The color of the further rocks fade by the distance, only enhance the scope of the place. Huge, big.
So, after the Canyon, we drove through some Navajo place.... I mean, seriously, I already typed this once, and it was funny, I thought, but then something on the blog thingy ate it, so i am rushing through to get to the next part... so blah blah Navajo thing.
So, after the Canyon, after Navajo country, we got to the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument which was 'dope/fly.' The volcanic oozage had created some squeezed up rock formations. It looked like a black top from back at Lafayette, but darker, richer, and not full of Safety-Orange playground equipment.
After that, we took the 2 hour drive back as the sun was setting and got back to the resort. Dora "the Explorer" was a great guide for the day and did not completely want to destroy all of us by the end of it from the talking, and the asking of the questions, and the family drama that always occurs on a vacation, no matter what. So, we got back to the resort, hung out for about 17 minutes, and hooked back to the Lobby area for dinner at the same place we had it last night, enchanting.
However, tonight was different. First night of Chanukah! We needed latkes, but they were not on the menu. No matter, at this place, they would give you Vampire Blood if you asked for it to create an Anti-Vampire Potion. So, we asked, they did... they made us latkes. A fair amount, and they were good, damn good; damn good latkes. For dinner, I had three Bar-Concocted Cherry Cokes, and for dessert I had the Artisanal assortment of cheeses. For real dinner, I shared the fish tacos and carne asada (which I assume they stole from the T'Bell) fajitas with my brother, Sam. By the end of the meal, I wanted to burst. It probably didn't help that I had three Cherry Cokes, Two dishes, and some (fine artisanal) cheeses.
After dinner, presents were exchanged. I got this bomb looking pair of J Crew socks. Despite them not fitting into my normal "Smart Wool Only" line-up of socks, they are greatly appreciated for their bomb lookingness style. I cannot find them on the internet to provide example, but they are black with green tipped tips. Tomorrow we have a 'free morning' and in the afternoon there are some kind of Jeep Tour or something like that. My brother Jim is skipping them, and I may as well and go see a flick nearby. For dinner, I believe we are going to get steaks and grill them on grills provided for us by the resort. Luckily for me, I have an appropriate t-shirt.
Comments
i hiked that bright angel trail when i was in arizona in august. we had to get there at 6am in order to hike all the way down into the canyon and get out by noon, by which time it was assumed that it would be too hot to stay alive if you tried to get back out or something. tight shit
