Desert Bushido

Very soon, close to 1,000 rice-eating, sake drinking, fierce Japanese...noncombat...soldiers will be arriving in Iraq. I for one am excited, for not only is this an unprecedented event in Japan, whose Constitution explicitly prohibits it's military's introduction into any foreign combat zone but it is also a step in the right direction as far as promoting an international committment to security and peacekeeping in Iraq.

Once deployed, the roughly 1,000 members of Japan's Self Defense Forces (SDF) would be involved in support roles only, such as water distribution and supply transport missions. They will also have strict rules of engagement prohibiting them from taking offensive action, and severely limiting their ability to help defend U.S. or other allied forces who come under enemy fire in the same vicinity.

Some may argue that their strict rules of engagement in fact evidences their lack of true resolve in the conflict, but I would disagree. It's instrumental to have an international presence in Iraq whether the troops are combat troops or not. In fact, foreign noncombat specialists free up American combat troops from performing reconstruction and peacekeeping duties that they have not been adequately trained for, and allows them to participate more freely where they can do the most good.

"The fact that [the Japanese] send any [troops] has enormous symbolic significance as well as practical," U.S. Ambassador Howard Baker said Thursday. Japan's participation would mean the "coalition against terrorism has gained the full participation of the second largest economy in the world... I don't think it matters so much whether it's 300 people, or 1,000 or 30,000."

That should serve as an example for other countries who have taken a roll like Japan's in bankrolling the war on terrorism. The money is appreciated, but some fucking manpower is also.

Thanks to Alapo, who initially brought it to my attention, the elusive Kenyatta Graves has been spotted! Albeit the following picture, is from 1996...the man looks good. Let me tell you something else about that picture...he's alone with a WOMAN! Shocking. I'm still waiting patiently for Graves's first novel to come out. He read some of it to my class back in 11th grade, and it sounded impressive although a bit styled after Toni Morrison.

The following dated 12/3/03

Aaron Laporte (12:53:43 AM): http://members.tripod.com/~aasnet/kenroz.jpg
Martocom (12:54:26 AM): holy shit
Martocom (12:54:28 AM): whered you find that
Aaron Laporte (12:54:34 AM): online
Aaron Laporte (12:54:36 AM): ITS GRAVES

For those of you interested, I was also made privy to a little known, publication of Kenyatta's from 2001, entitled: Healing the scars of masculinity: reflections on baseball, gunshots, and war wounds in August Wilson's Fences / Keith Clark.

Any other information people have on Graves will be appreciated by his admirers...(Curtis + Alapo)

J. Denvir's Brood*

Twilight.jpg

As democratic primaries across the nation draw nearer, its about time for us democrats to choose a candidate to endorse. Is it the smooth talking Sharpton? The firebrand Dean? The War Hero Clark? That tired face, Gephardt? It's your own decision, but know this: Grandfather Twilight and his Forest Creatures have cast their lot in with Dennis Kucinich, or so claims his website.

nose2nose.jpg

Here is an excerpt of an interview with Grandfather Twilight and a concerned citizen, Barbara Helen Berger.

GT: Children are dying from bombs and guns. The moon sees all of this. But she also sees something else. It is like a dream. Such a good dream, I could hardly believe it at first.

BHB: Tell me!

GT: There is a brave, truth-telling man from Ohio. His name is Dennis Kucinich, a Congressman who is running for President. As you know, I tend to be a calm old man, but when I heard Dennis speak, I got excited. He plans to create a Department of Peace. At last! Why has no one done it before? This is exactly how a wise President should think, what a good President should do! (GT thumped a gentle fist on the table.)

Sounds a little red to me, Gramps. I'll stick with Sharpton.
